BURNABY, B.C. – Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 rallied behind a pair of goals by Daniel Haber to take a 2-1 win against Oregon State University on Saturday at Simon Fraser University to complete an undefeated preseason campaign.
Haber scored twice in the second half, including a 90th-minute game-winner, after 2015 PDL Young Player of the Year Timmy Mueller (Lane United FC) had given the Beavers the lead in the 14th minute.
“I think it’s the first time we’ve been down in the preseason, and I’m glad we were down because it’s going to happen at some stage during the regular season,” said WFC2 head coach Alan Koch. “From an exercise perspective, it’s actually what we wanted. Oregon gave us a good game, but full credit to the guys. You could see they wanted to win and they did what it took to get the result.”
WFC2 got back on level terms just past the hour mark when Fatawu Safiu’s through-ball played in Haber, who finished for his fifth goal of the preseason. A former Portland Timbers 2 midfielder, Safiu has put in some impressive performances in the build up to the new season.
“You can see Fatawu is a winner,” Koch said. “He knows this is a friendly, but he wants to win the game. And you can see a little bit of class from Daniel Haber to score the two goals.”
Mitch Piraux provided the pass for Haber’s second, which allowed the side to finish the preseason on a positive note ahead of a trip to face Orange County Blues FC in its regular-season opener next Saturday.
“We’ve played some professional teams, we’ve played some good college teams,” Koch said. “We obviously set it out a certain way so all the guys got an opportunity. I think we have a good idea of what the group is capable of. The friendlies were great, but we’re excited now to go play for three points.”
