CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte Eagles will host Orlando City SC on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. ET at Queens Sports Complex. Charlotte (8-13-3, 27 points) sits in a three-way tie for ninth place in the USL PRO standings, while Orlando (16-2-4, 52 points) sits atop the table, three points ahead of the Richmond Kickers.
Charlotte is coming off a 3-1 win over the Rochester Rhinos on Saturday night which boosted them from 12th to ninth place, one spot out of the final playoff position. Jorge Herrera opened the scoring for the Eagles as he converted a penalty kick in the 31st minute. Second-half substitute Zak Boggs doubled the host's advantage in the 82nd minute as he slotted home a through-ball from Ben Newnam. The Rhinos cut the deficit to one as Onua Obasi got his head on the end of a Johnny Mendoza free kick, but Boggs notched his second and restored the two-goal lead in the 89th minute as he was played in behind the Rhinos defense by Drew Yates.
The late assist from Drew Yates was his eighth of the season. Yates now sits tied for first in the league with Rodrigo Lopez of Sacramento. Herrera scored his eighth goal of the season on Saturday, he now sits in a four-way tie for seventh in the league. Herrera leads the Eagles with 19 points on eight goals and three assists.
The Lions head in to the midweek matchup coming off a 3-1 against the Harrisburg City Islanders, also this past Saturday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The City Islanders, who handed the Lions their second loss of the season on August 9th, opened the scoring in the sixth minute as Robbie Derschang slipped the ball past Orlando keeper Miguel Gallardo.
The Lions would roar back as Darwin Ceren's 40-yard free kick evaded everyone and evened the score at 1-1. Kevin Molino's 19th-minute goal not only gave the Lions the lead but also tied the USL PRO single-season scoring record as it was his 15th goal of the season. Ceren added his second in the 89th minute and sealed the victory for Orlando.
Charlotte has played Orlando twice this season, falling twice in Orlando by scores of 3-1 and 4-1.
