MONTREAL – FC Montreal announced its official roster for the 2016 USL season on Tuesday, with the team’s leading scorer Alessandro Riggi returning to lead a youthful squad into its second season in the league.

Riggi scored nine goals and added two assists as Montreal finished 10th in the USL’s Eastern Conference last season. He is joined by 16 other players who competed for the side in 2015, including minutes leaders Zachary Sukunda and Janouk Charbonneau, goalkeeper David Paulmin, and attacking options Charles Joly and Jacques Haman.

Riggi and goalkeeper Luca Leone are the oldest players in the squad at the age of 22, but Coach Philippe Eullaffroy believes the experience the majority of the squad gained in the club’s inaugural season will serve them well in 2016.

“We are a really young team, but the 2015 experience will help the whole group to perform better earlier in the season,” said Eullaffroy. “The cohesion, a result of the players sharing the same DNA, will help make up for this lack of experience. We aim to be in the playoff race this year.”

Among the new additions to the squad are Ballou Jean-Yves Tabla, a former Canadian Soccer Association U17 Player of the Year, who will be the youngest player in the squad at the age of 16. The squad is comprised of 22 Canadian players, two from Cameroon, and one from Switzerland.

“We believe in our development system, our playing identity and the identity of the club,” Eullaffroy said, “so having a large majority of players developed at the club in the USL roster is simply logical for what we aim for: bringing a maximum of players as close as possible to the first-team level.”
