CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte Independence have announced the signing of veteran midfielder Jun Marques Davidson ahead of the 2016 USL season. The former Vancouver Whitecaps FC player is the seventh new signing by the Independence this offseason.

“We are delighted to bring a player of Jun’s caliber and experience to Charlotte,” said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “His experience in the top league in Japan, as well as MLS, provides not only mentorship to younger players, but organization and leadership on the field.

“In addition, Jun provides strong professional character and mentality. On the ball he is an extraordinarily clean passer who will connect the backs and the midfield for us. He is not only excellent in possession, but able to find the right pass to get the attack started.”

A native of Toyko, Japan, Davidson and his family moved to California in 1995, but he returned to Japan to begin his professional career in 2002 with Omiya Ardija of the J.League Division 2. Davidson returned to the U.S. in 2009 when he signed with the Carolina RailHawks, and followed Coach Martin Rennie to the Whitecaps in 2011.

Davidson made 50 appearances over two seasons with the Whitecaps, and earned the club’s “Jock MacDonald Unsung Hero Award” for his efforts in his first year with the club. More recently, Davidson returned to the RailHawks, and in 2014 earned the club’s Most Valuable Player award.

The Independence will kick off the 2016 USL regular season on Saturday, March 26 when they host Louisville City FC at Ramblewood Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
