CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Two key figures for the Charlotte Independence in their inaugural season will return to the club in 2016, as the club announced it had re-signed brothers Alex and Enzo Martinez on Wednesday morning.
Enzo Martinez finished tied for sixth in the USL with seven assists in 2015, and also had four goals to finish second on the Independence in scoring. A former first round selection in the MLS SuperDraft in 2011, Enzo Martinez earned USL Team of the Week selection twice during the season, and scored the winning goal as the Independence handed the Rochester Rhinos their only loss of the 2015 USL season.

“Enzo is a key component of our attack,” said Independence Coach Mike Jeffries. “He has a knack for finding and creating chances. His ability to play deceptive killer passes led to numerous chances for us last year. Enzo’s movement in the final third put him in spots to get on the end of plays, which he is then able to finish.”
Alex Martinez had two goals and two assists in 16 appearances for the Independence, earning USL Team of the Week honors once. Jeffries paid tribute to his work-rate, and ability to create space in one-on-one matchups.“With an extremely competitive personality, Alex works constantly and tirelessly on both sides of the ball,” said Jeffries. “His ability to create space for himself in 1-v-1 situations leads to chances for us, while his movement off the ball and on field energy consistently pressures opposing defenses.”
