CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Battery got a pair of goals from Ricardo Garbanzo as they took a 3-0 victory against the New York Cosmos on Saturday night at MUSC Health Stadium. Maikel Chang provided assists on both of Garbanzo’s goals, while Dante Marini wrapped up the win that concluded the preseason for the four-time USL champions.

“The good thing was you saw a few goals,” said Battery Head Coach Mike Anhaeuser. “You saw Ricky Garbanzo getting two, great balls in by Chang on both of them. If we play like that it’s great, but we can’t really count on this because it’s still preseason. We want to come out here and get a 3-0 win next week when the points count.”

The Cosmos took the initiative early on as the Battery gradually grew into the game. Charleston’s Zach Prince forced a save from Cosmos goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer in the 19th minute off a free kick by Justin Portillo, while the Cosmos had a chance seven minutes later only for Guenzatti’s shot to be blocked by Taylor Mueller.

The Battery took the lead just past the half-hour mark as an angled ball by Obi Woodbine found Chang in the penalty area. The Cuban headed the ball across goal, and Sebastian Garbanzo was on hand to head home a finish.

Charleston goalkeeper Alex Tambakis made a good save to keep the Battery on top before the break as he denied Juan Arango in the 34th minute. The Battery almost added to their lead just before the halftime whistle as well, only for Portillo’s free kick to go just over the crossbar.

Both teams had chances after the break, but it was the Battery that doubled their lead with 17 minutes to go on Garbanzo’s second. Portillo’s pass to the left side found Chang, whose cross was nodded home by Garbanzo to make it 2-0.

Seven minutes later the Battery wrapped up the win as Mueller’s long pass down the left found Chang. His cross was deflected, but it reached Marini, who volleyed in a finish for Charleston’s third.

The Battery will open the 2016 USL regular season with a contest against FC Cincinnati on Saturday, March 26 at MUSC Health Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
