CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Battery announced on Thursday evening the signing of Trinidad & Tobago internationals Neveal Hackshaw and Ataullah Guerra ahead of the 2016 USL season. Both signings are pending receipt of their International Transfer Certificates.
Guerra has made 38 appearances for the Soca Warriors, with the 28-year-old central midfielder joining the Battery after competing for Central FC in the TT Pro League. Guerra scored the only goal as Central FC defeated Guatemala’s Comunicaciones 1-0 in the group stage of the 2015-16 CONCACAF Champions League, and also competed against the LA Galaxy in the competition.
“He wants to do well, he wants the team to do well,” Battery Coach Mike Anhaeuser said. “He gets on the players, he gets on himself. But he does it in a good way, because he wants to succeed. He gets upset if he misses a pass that he knows he should have hit, he wants guys to get it in to him. And that’s what guys with experience and that edge bring to the table. We have a lot of players like that. And he seems to have a bit of character, too — a fun character, which makes it enjoyable.”

The 20-year-old Hackshaw made his debut for Trinidad & Tobago last March, and has made four appearances for his country. He more recently played for North East Stars F.C., and joins the Battery eager to show the potential he has as a holding midfielder.
“Neveal is very strong and very good with the ball, so he might have a little more ability with holding players off,” Anhaeuser said. “You don’t want to compare a player, or put pressure on him, but Hackshaw kinda fills the mold, and that’s why I was interested in getting him.
“[If he had stayed in Trinidad] he probably would have moved to one of the bigger clubs, and he’s moving here for that reason: To try to grow and become a better player, and maybe take it to the next level: MLS or maybe Europe or wherever.”
The Battery open the 2016 USL regular season on Saturday, March 26 as they host FC Cincinnati at MUSC Health Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
