PHOENIX – Arizona United SC’s Sam Garza and Gibson Bardsley stole the show on Saturday night as the club concluded its preseason preparations with an intra-squad scrimmage at Arizona State University.

Playing for Team Red, which consistent mostly of signed players, Garza had two goals and an assist, while Bardsley added a goal and assist to highlight a 6-0 win against Team White’s trialist-heavy lineup.

The manner in which his presumptive starters combine was pleasing to United Head Coach Frank Yallop as he prepares for his first regular-season contest in charge of the side.

“I love all aspects of our game right now,” Yallop told’s H. Jose Bosch. “I’m looking forward to showcasing that and hopefully we can get a good result on the road in our first game in LA.”

Garza, who last season had four goals and two assists for Seattle Sounders FC 2, produced a piece of magic to open the scoring in the 23rd minute as he used a quick move to create space from his marker on the left, and then lashed a right-footed shot into the top-right corner.

His second arrived in the second half when he picked up possession on the left side of the penalty area, 20 yards from goal. After looking up, he moved onto his right foot and curled a finish just inside the right post.

“We’re slowly finding a system that works for us,” Garza said. “We’re all pretty pumped and pretty excited for the test coming up.”

Bardsley, meanwhile, notched the second goal of the night as he controlled a diagonal ball from Long Tan on the right side and fired home a shot off the bounce into the net. The USL veteran also played provider, setting up Blair Gavin with a perfect cross from the right that allowed the midfielder to finish in the second half.

As pleased as the side was with its offensive display, though, a visit to the defending Western Conference Champion in the LA Galaxy II next Saturday has the side focused on getting the new season off to a strong start.

“Just because we came out here and scored five or six goals; it doesn’t mean anything,” Garza said. “It’s done and over with. Our focus is to LA now. We’re going to have to put in good work this week in training to prepare ourselves for a very tough test in LA.”
