PHOENIX – Arizona United SC earned a 2-1 victory against Grand Canyon University in a preseason scrimmage on Tuesday morning as goals by Tony Cascio and Rudi Skarcel highlighted a strong performance by Coach Frank Yallop’s side.
Arizona opened the scoring in the 17th minute, as Cascio played a clever give-and-go with Sam Garza that sprang him into the penalty area with time and space to find the back of the net. Then just before the hour-mark a good build-up down the left side resulted in a strong cross from the left, and Skarcel tucked home the finish.
“It was a difficult game playing against these guys at home because they were revved up for it,” said Yallop. “But I thought we handled it great. I thought we moved the ball well and had some great chances.”

United took control early on, and could have taken the lead before Cascio’s opener. Garza created a chance for Chris Cortez in just the fifth minute after getting a cross in from the right, but Cortez’s finish went over the crossbar.
Cascio went close three minutes later, as he cut back inside onto his left foot from a similar position to Garza moments before and fired in a low shot that was saved. The former Orlando City SC midfielder was a threat throughout the first half on the right, as he almost set up chances for Garza and Corzted before finally opening the scoring himself.
While Grand Canyon pulled a goal back late on a penalty kick, United’s players were pleased with the way the side was starting to come together in attack.
“I think everyone’s been doing well,” said midfielder Blair Gavin. “We’re starting to learn our roles within the team. We’re starting to be more dynamic going forward. We’re missing that final touch a little bit, but that comes.”
United will wrap up its preseason on Saturday with an open intra-squad scrimmage on the campus of Arizona State University. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. PT.
