TUCSON, Ariz. – Honors finished even between USL Western Conference rivals the Swope Park Rangers and Arizona United SC as they played to a 0-0 draw at the Desert Diamond Cup on Saturday evening at the Kino Sports Complex.
Despite the scoreless finish, both sides created chances in an entertaining contest. Arizona almost took the lead just two minutes in as James Nortey broke in on goal but hit the crossbar with a lifted finish past SPR goalkeeper Jon Kempin. United went close again in the 14th minute when Uchenna Uzo’s header was saved by Kempin, who then turned the rebound around the post.
The Rangers also had chances, as Dane Kelly sent a lobbed finish over the crossbar midway through the half, but it was Arizona that continued had more chances to open the scoring as both sides experimented with their lineups in the second half. Jose Cuevas clipped the outside of the post with a free kick in the 63rd minute. Just over 10 minutes later, Alberto Garcia’s shot from the top of the penalty area was parried, and the Rangers defense managed to recover and clear in time before the rebound could be put away.
Swope Park had a late chance through Ryan James which went high, but the sides settled for a draw as they continued their preparations for the upcoming USL season.
