COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC regained first place in the USL's Western Conference on Wednesday night as it took a 3-0 victory against the Austin Aztex at Sand Creek Stadium. Luke Vercollone scored twice for the Switchbacks, who now head for top-of-the-table clash with OKC Energy FC on Saturday night.
The defeat eliminated the Aztex from playoff contention in their inaugural USL season, as the Switchbacks evened the season series at two wins apiece.
“It was a great start to the game, but I thought we let our foot off the pedal in the first half, but
the second half we came out with a lot of energy and got two great goals,” said Switchbacks FC
Head Coach Steve Trittschuh.
The first goal of the night came in just the second minute when the Switchbacks’ Charles
Eloundou was brought down in the Aztex's penalty area. That gave Vercollone a shot at his eighth penalty kick of the season and he sank it into the left corner of the net.
The newest addition to the Switchbacks on loan from Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids, Eloundou, netted his first goal for the club in the 54th minute off a well-placed pass from Miguel Gonzalez. Eloundou glided past his defender into the right side of the penalty area and sent a low shot into the left corner to make it 2-0.
Vercollone added his 14th goal of the season with five minutes to go, thanks to a cross from Davy Armstrong. The first signing in Switchbacks history is now tied for fourth in the USL alongside Arizona United SC's Long Tan, while also adding nine assists.
“I’m stoked to be at the top of the conference at this part of the season,” said Vercollone. "It was a well-fought game by the guys, especially keeping the shutouts going. I couldn’t be happier with the results. Now it’s on to OKC.”
“Tonight’s win puts us in a great position,” addedTrittschuh. “We are back on top of the conference. Now we just need six more points.”
The Switchbacks can claim the top seed for the USL's Western Conference Playoffs with victories in their final two contests. Next up is a visit to second-place Energy FC at Taft Stadium on Saturday night before the Switchbacks refurn home to face the third-placed LA Galaxy II on September 19 at Sand Creek Stadium.
