WILMINGTON, N.C. – Wilmington Hammerheads FC has announced the addition of goalkeeper Jon Smits ahead of the 2016 USL season.
The 6-foot-4 Canadian previously played for FC Edmonton, where he had spent the past four seasons. Smith had a breakout season in 2014 as he claimed the NASL’s Golden Glove award for the lowest goals-against average in the league.
“I'm excited to be working with this bright young group and I'm anticipating a positive work environment within the team,” said Smits. “I'm ecstatic for the challenge ahead and can't wait to get to work to achieve our goals this year.”

Last season, Smits was sent on loan to the Montreal Impact ahead of its CONCACAF Champions League Final against Club America, but did not see action for the club. Overall, he made 38 appearances for Edmonton in the league.
“John is a great addition to our roster,” said Hammerheads Head Coach Mark Briggs. “He brings good professional experience and will solidify our back line.”
