Arriving once every four years, February 29 is a rare day.
This year, it is also the day the international community celebrates Rare Disease Day, and in commemoration, a special fundraising t-shirt inspired by Evan Mundine and co-designed by U.S. Soccer legend Alexi Lalas has been released.
Mundine, who in 2015 became an official member of Orange County Blues FC, suffers from eight rare diseases including severe Crohn’s disease. Living in Balstrop, Texas, Mundine became an avid fan of the Blues from afar, and signed with the team ahead of its game in Texas with the Austin Aztex last season.

“We are honored to add Evan to our roster as his life story and love for the OC Blues is a true inspiration to the entire organization,” Blues Coach Oliver Wyss said at the time. “His determination, spirit and positive attitude to overcome his daily struggles provide us with a remarkable role model.”
Now, the limited edition t-shirt inspired by Mundine represents the rare work ethic it takes to be a great athlete, and acts as a reminder of those living with rare diseases that can help inspire. The design features a honeycomb soccer ball pattern around the edges of the crest, a heart to represent passion, and Mundine’s initials to pay tribute to one of the toughest people on earth. The t-shirt, which is on sale for the next seven days, can be purchased at athletesbrand.com/alexi.
