Real Monarchs SLC took a 3-0 victory against Costa Rican side AD Carmelita on Monday night as part of their preseason tour in the Caribbean. Ricardo Velazco and Andrew Brody both scored in the first half to lead their side to victory.
The Monarchs fell in the opening game of their tour on Thursday night against Santos de Guapiles, another Costa Rica Primera Division side, but on Monday struck quickly as they were awarded a penalty kick in just the second minute. Velazco, the 2014 PDL Young Player of the Year, scored from the spot for an early 1-0 lead.
Both sides had chances to find the net in a frantic opening 10 minutes, as Riley McGovern and Brody both sent dangerous crosses into the penalty area, but Carmelita began to gain control after the opening flurry. The hosts’ momentum was broken midway through the half, however, when Brody finished off a good move to make it 2-0 for the Monarchs.

Carmelita thought it had pulled a goal back moments later, only for the offside flag to be raised, and forced Monarchs goalkeeper Lalo Fernandez into a good save late in the half to keep the score 2-0 at the break.
The Monarchs gained more control in the second half as Tyler Arnone and Alec Sundly performed well in midfield, and took a three-goal lead when trialist Jean Carlos was left free to head in a free kick by Jay Caparelli. The Monarchs will continue their trip in Costa Rica on Thursday when they face Saprissa. The club’s USL season opener is set for Saturday, March 26 as it hosts Saint Louis FC at Rio Tinto Stadium.
