Real Monarchs SLC fullback Boyd Okwuonu was called into the United States’ U23 Olympic Qualifying squad on Wednesday, joining Coach Andi Herzog’s squad as an injury replacement for Eric Miller. The United States kicks off CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying on Thursday night, as it faces Canada at Sporting Park.

Okwuonu appeared in 12 games for the Monarchs in his rookie professional season, after having previously played for Orlando City U23 and the Carolina Dynamo in the PDL. Formerly a standout at the University of North Carolina, Okwuonu has also made three appearances and one start for Real Salt Lake in MLS this season.

Following its opening game in the group stage with Canada, the U.S. is also set to face Cuba on Oct. 3, and Panama on Oct. 5 as it looks for a place in the semifinals. The two sides that advance to the tournament’s final will earn a place at the 2016 Rio Olympics, with the winner of the third-place game set to face Colombia in a playoff for a spot in the event.
