BURNABY, B.C. – Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 took a 2-1 victory against Seattle Sounders FC 2 as the USL Western Conference rivals met in a preseason exhibition at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex. Daniel Haber and Victor Blasco scored for WFC2, while Emir Alihodzic had S2’s goal.
“I think every preseason game [we’re going to try] different things,” said WFC2 Head Coach Alan Koch. “Today we had a number of first team players come down and get minutes, so it was useful from that perspective. [There was] good value for some of our players in playing with the first team and to mesh them as a group because that’s what happens during the season.”
The first half opened brightly, and both sides had numerous chances throughout the half. WFC2 took the lead in the ninth minute when Haber put home a cross from the right by Jordan Smith for a 1-0 lead.
S2 continued to press high up the field, and got back on level terms seven minutes before the break. With Vancouver temporarily down to 10 players with Kianz Froese receiving attention for an injury, Seattle forced a turnover in the attacking end that Alihodzic put away.
WFC2 regained the lead before the break, however, as a good pass by Sam Adekugbe was flicked on by Nicolas Mezquida to Blasco. The Spaniard slotted home his finish to make it 2-1.
Chances continued to arrive after the break, but neither side was able to find the back of the net as WFC2 held on to take victory.
