SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento Republic FC’s Harry Williams celebrated the announcement of his signing earlier in the day by scoring the only goal as Republic FC took a 1-0 win against Sacramento State on Wednesday afternoon at Hornet Field.
The goal arrived in the 13th minute, as Williams received a pass in the center of the field, fought off a defender and sent a pass forward to Max Alvarez. The midfield sent a quick return pass to Williams on the right, who took a pair of touches before he fired home a right-footed finish.
Alvarez was also involved as Sacramento almost doubled its lead in the 25th minute when he pushed down the right side. Alvarez found Joaquin Rivas in the center, and the midfielder sent a looping shot toward the top-left corner, only for his effort to go just over the crossbar.

The Hornets had chances of their own, as forward Cylus Sandoval shot just wide of the right post from the left side of the penalty area in the fourth minute. Then with 15 minutes to go, Trevor Jackson fired a strong free kick on goal, but Republic FC goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek was well positioned to save.
Republic FC had a pair of chances early in the second half that came to Mackenzie Pridham at the top of the penalty area, but neither finish found the back of the net. Richie Cardozo also went close late with a diving header from Emrah Klimenta’s cross from the right, but Hornets goalkeeper Philip Bru was able to make the save.
Danny Barrera also hit the crossbar with a minute to go for Sacramento, but Republic FC wouldn’t add to Williams’ early finish as it took its first win of the preseason.
