SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio’s new USL club announced on Tuesday it had signed former New England Revolution defender Stephen McCarthy for the 2016 USL season.
“Stephen is a tall center-back who I have worked with previously,” said San Antonio Head Coach Darren Powell. “In addition to being a great defender, his leadership skills will be great for our new club.”

McCarthy most recently played for Finnish First Division side KuPS, where he made 10 appearances in the 2015 season. A former standout at the University of North Carolina, the 27-year-old defender made more than 60 appearances for the Revolution after being drafted in the second round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft.
“I am excited to come to Texas to play in my home state,” said McCarthy. “San Antonio is an amazing city and I am ready to push myself and the team to do great things on the field this season.”A former member of the PDL’s Carolina Dynamo and DFW Tornados, McCarthy earned ACC All-Conference Second Team honors in 2010 as the Tar Heels reached the semifinals of the NCAA College Cup. He previously played in college for Santa Clara University.
