TUCSON, Ariz. – The Swope Park Rangers finished the Desert Diamond Cup with an undefeated record as Dane Kelly scored the only goal in a 1-0 win against host and PDL side FC Tucson on Saturday evening.

After the Rangers had carried much of the play in the first half, Kelly found the breakthrough in the 32nd minute when Nansel Selbol brought the ball forward from midfield, drew an FC Tucson defender and found Kelly inside the penalty area. The USL’s all-time regular-season scoring leader volleyed into the back of the net to make it 1-0.

The Rangers had gone close prior to taking the lead, as Kelly and Kris Tyrpak both missed the target when well placed to finish. Selbol also went close after dispossessing a defender and rounding the goalkeeper, only for the defender to recover and clear his shot to safety with the goal open.

Swope Park continued to threaten in the second half, as substitute Tomas Granitto hit the post with a thunderous shot. Tommy Meyer also went close as his point-blank header from Tyler Pasher’s corner kick was saved, while Norberto Ochoa and Mark Anthony Gonzalez also went close as well.

The Rangers wouldn't need to add to their lead, however, as they finished the tournament with a 2-0-2 record.
