After spending his first professional season in the USL with Orlando City SC, former St. John’s and Jersey Express goalkeeper Rafael Diaz was pleased for the opportunity to return close to home with the New York Red Bulls II.
“I was happy because when you’re there with the team for two weeks, you become accustomed with some of the players and it was cool that I had a relationship with some of the players,” Diaz told NewYorkRedBulls.com’s Chris Orihuela. “Once [John Wolyniec] told me I was going to stay in the Red Bulls family, I was happy because I started relationships with people and I didn’t want to switch teams and start all over. It was cool that I was going to be in the same family.”

Diaz will continue with the Red Bulls II in 2016, after recently having his contract option taken up by the club. A backup for much of the season to Santiago Castaño, Diaz nonetheless brought positive energy to the Red Bulls II throughout the season, and performed solidly in his six appearances for the side.“He’s a very hard worker, very competitive; that’s been a great asset for training,” Red Bulls II Head Coach John Wolyniec told Orihuela. “Even if he doesn’t play a lot of games he brings a great attitude to training. That part about Rafa I love.”
