Arizona United SC goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski set career-highs in minutes and games played, and set a USL single-season record for saves in 2015.

You’ll probably forgive him, though, if he’d like to see his workload in that final category diminish this season.

“It was a mentally and physically draining season last year,” Woszczynski told ArizonaUnited.com’s Jose Bosch. “[There were] some tough breaks here and there, some dropped points and a lot of action for myself. I took a lot of shots and I took a bit of a beating.”

Woszczynski recorded 130 saves in the regular season a year ago, 41 more than the second-placed goalkeepers in that category, as on many nights he became a one-man wall trying to push back the tide of opposing defenses. His 13-save performance against Orange County Blues FC on July 5 was matched only by Tulsa Roughnecks FC goalkeeper Jake Feener for a single-game performance, as United’s defense proved its undoing in a season where the club finished 10th in the Western Conference.

Through all of that, though, Woszczynski persisted, and saved arguably his best performance for late in the season on the road at Sacramento Republic FC. A seven-save shutout in a 0-0 draw with Republic FC ended the season on a positive note for the 27-year-old goalkeeper, and with Frank Yallop now at the helm as United’s new coach, he is now looking for even bigger things for himself, and the club.

“I set that standard for myself coming into the season,” Woszczynski told Bosch. “That’s a level I know I can be at. So I want to start from there and reach an even higher level.”
