After helping the Rochester Rhinos claim the 2015 USL Championship, standout left back Onua Obasi is looking to take his game to Major League Soccer. As reported by CSN Philadelphia’s Dave Zeitlin, the defender is now training with the Philadelphia Union after two successful seasons with the Rhinos.

A native of Birmingham, England, Obasi joined the Rhinos for the start of the 2014 season after competing for the CFC Azul in the PDL for two seasons. Obasi quickly became a fixture in Bob Lilley’s lineup, as he made 44 appearances in the past two regular seasons, while recording one goal and four assists.

Obasi was a key figure in the Rhinos’ defense that conceded a USL-record low 15 goals this past season. He also started in all three of Rochester’s contests in the 2015 USL Playoffs, as the club added the USL Championship to its regular-season title. Obasi also played against the Union for the Rhinos in the fourth round of the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, when Rochester earned a 0-0 draw at PPL Park before being eliminated in a penalty shootout.

The 27-year-old is the second reported USL standout to have trained with the Union so far this offseason, with 2015 USL Rookie of the Year Finalist Ken Tribbett also having spent time with the club as Jim Curtin auditions options that could help a defense that has conceded 55 goals in 33 games this season.
