SANDY, Utah – Real Salt Lake announced the signing of Emery Welshman on Friday, as the 24-year-old forward made the move from the club’s USL side, Real Monarchs SLC.

“Emery deserves a lot of credit as he did everything asked of him over the past year. He matured and accepted the challenges given to him by the staff and in the end persevered to end the season on a very strong run,” said RSL Technical Director Craig Waibel. “We are extremely happy for Emery to be the first player to take advantage of his opportunities and look forward to his contributions with the first team in 2016.”

Welshman scored six goals and added two assists in 19 appearances for the Monarchs in the 2015 USL season, and played a key role in the club’s strong late-season run that saw it earn five consecutive victories to close the season.

In the past year, Welshman also starred on the international stage as he scored three goals in five appearances for Guyana. A former draft selection of Toronto FC in 2013, Welshman played for Sigma FC in Canada’s League 1 Ontario in 2014 before joining the Monarchs prior to their inaugural season.

Waibel also praised the work of Monarchs Head Coach Freddy Juarez, whose hard work paid dividends as the side showed continued progress throughout the year, which in turn led to Friday’s signing.

“The environment that Coach Freddy Juarez and his staff have created challenges young players to mature and improve on a daily basis with the end goal of having a shot at the first team roster,” said Waibel.
