As the headliner in the first set of signings announced by FC Cincinnati last month, Austin Berry said returning to his home city to continue his professional career was a major opportunity.

“[Head Coach] John Harkes and [Assistant Coach] Ryan Martin and the other staff put an interesting prospect in front of me, to be part of the start of FC Cincinnati, what we hope to be a very big thing,” Berry told the club’s website recently.

The 2012 MLS Rookie of the Year with the Chicago Fire, Berry arrived to start a new chapter of his career with the USL expansion club, where he was unveiled alongside a group that brings experience from both MLS and the USL. Berry said many of that group, which includes 2015 USL champion Patrick McMahon and other USL veterans like Paul Nicholson, were looking forward like him to being the first players to represent the club on the field.

“There’s only going to be one first class, and that’s the kind of opportunity that all of the guys here are really excited about, to build it from the group up and be in here from the beginning,” he said.

Berry featured for the Fire U23’s in the PDL before being drafted by the club out of the University of Louisville. Now, he’ll be a player to watch as Cincinnati looks to spring out of the gates quickly in its inaugural season.
