BRADENTON, Fla. – 2016 USL expansion club FC Cincinnati will host the inaugural edition of the USL Experience, which will see top players from the Super Y League visit the club for a residential camp next April.
The USL Experience was unveiled on Friday night in a special presentation at the 2015 SYL North American Finals at the world-class facilities of IMG Academy. The new initiative will allow 70 SYL players the chance to train and compete with a USL club, learn from professional coaches and also gain mentoring from current professionals.
“The time for youth players to dream about playing professional soccer for an American-based club is now,” said Gordon Bengtson, the USL Academy’s Executive Director in a statement. “Unlike any other elite player programming in our country, the USL Experience is the first of its kind and will ignite a new level of interest in American professional soccer.”
FC Cincinnati recently introduced its first 11 signings in club history, including 2012 MLS Rookie of the Year Austin Berry. Owned by former Cincinnati Reds Owner Carl Lindner III, the club is set to play at the newly-renovated Nippert Stadium in 2016, with former U.S. international John Harkes named as the club’s head coach.
Harkes said he was looking forward to welcoming the top SYL prospects for the chance to learn what it takes to make it at the pro level.
“On behalf of all of us here in Cincinnati, we are excited to host the best 70 players in the Super Y League at our facilities in April for the USL Experience,” Harkes said.
