CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte Independence have retained a key defensive piece from the club’s inaugural season, as it announced it had re-signed Ugandan international Henry Kalungi on Thursday.
A former member of the Richmond Kickers, Kalungi made 14 appearances for Charlotte after joining the club mid-season after completing his recovery from a torn ACL and MCL. The veteran defender started 11 contests as the Independence just missed out on a place in the 2015 USL Playoffs.
“We are excited to have Henry on board for the 2016 season,” said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “His ability, experience and leadership were big factors for us when we made the end-of-season run. Having Henry with the team from the beginning of the season is a boost for us organizationally at the back, as he will provide not only top-flight defending but leadership and communication. Henry earns the respect of his teammates each day with his positive attitude and his work ethic, but more importantly, his ability to push the group makes us better as a team on game day.”
