CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte Independence added a pair of new faces for the 2016 USL season on Wednesday when the club announced the signing of midfielder Lewis Hilton and goalkeeper Cody Mizell.

A two-time PDL All-Conference selection with the Ocala Stampede, Hilton turns profession with the Independence after a standout college career at Young Harris College. Hilton led the Stampede to back-to-back Southern Conference championships in the 2014 and 2015 PDL seasons, while in college he earned NSCAA Division II All-American honors in the past two years.

“He fits well with how we play and the characteristics with which we look for in the midfield — he is clean technically and his passes are incisive and deceptive,” Independence Coach Mike Jeffries said. “Equally important, he looks to create advantages with them. Lewis’ competitive nature is second to none and shows each time he takes the field, a quality we value highly.”

Mizell arrives in Charlotte after a stint with Icelandic club Knattspyrnufélagið Fram.  Previously a member of the Atlanta Silverback and the Tampa Bay Rowdies, the 24-year-old Mizell also earned All-ACC Second Team honors with Clemson in 2011.

“In Cody, we have a goalkeeper who possesses the quality and character we need for our goalkeeping situation,” said Jeffries. “He has professional experience as a No. 1 last year in Iceland, he has a great mentality and daily attitude, and he is a top talent. Cody is very quick off his line and an excellent shot stopper, as well as very good with his feet. Cody will challenge the keeper we get from Colorado day-in and day-out and will help us win games when called upon.”
