CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte Independence announced the club has exercised its contract option on standout forward Tomasz Zahorski, and re-signed defender Jack Metcalf for the 2016 USL season.

Zahorski and Metcalf join Jorge Herrera on the Independence’s roster, with the Colombian playmaker having been signed to a two-year contract prior to the club’s inaugural season in 2015.

“Tomasz is a first-class striker who we are glad to re-sign,” said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “His experience and ability are unique in the USL. Though he was limited by injuries last season, he was a vital contributor when on the field. He filled all the qualities we needed in a lone striker — we were able to combine through him as his movement is excellent, he challenged for long balls and, most importantly, he is an excellent finisher and a presence in the box.”

Zahorski and Herrera had solid 2015 seasons for Charlotte as the Independence just missed out on a place in the USL Playoffs. Zahorski had three goals and one assist in 17 appearances for the club, while Herrera finished tied for the team lead with seven assists, and also had four goals in 18 appearances.

“It’s fantastic to have our captain back,” said Jeffries on Herrera’s return. “On the field Jorge provides a creative spark in his ability to either score or set up goals. His passion, energy and competitiveness are infectious and he helps push the group. He also brings a great deal of experience and leadership, which was vital to a young group last year.”
